The Value of a Balanced Offensive Attack

Post-Corner Passing ConceptI love the Triple Option. Old school Wing-T offenses are awesome. But there’s a certain value in having a balanced offensive attack.

Balance doesn’t mean a 50/50 run-pass ratio. Balance is simply having the threat of running or passing on any given down. But it does go a bit beyond that. Screens and play action don’t really equate to balance.

That’s where a lot of the run-heavy offensive attacks fall short. The Double Wing Offense may have the threat of a Tight End Pop Pass on any given down… but it’s limited to that. Play action passes.

What do you do when you get in a situation where you must pass? When you’re coming from behind, or trying to run a 2-minute drill?

The 3-back offensive attack is often dead in the water in those situations. The Quarterback doesn’t have either the ability or the reps to execute a drop back passing attack. If one of these team stumbles out of the gate, the road to a comeback is going to be rough.

The Pistol Power Offense System is a more balanced approach. You may not put as much emphasis on the passing attack. If you have the ability however, the tools are there.

That doesn’t make the offense outdated or any less viable. But the coaching staff must be aware. Run-centric offensive attacks have to put more emphasis on coming out of the gates strong.
