How to Coach The Curl-Flat Passing Concept from Trips Formations

Transcription of This Video

[00:00:00] I’m Joe Daniel from JoeDanielFootball.com and the Football Coaching Podcast. I want to show you a route today that’s out of the 3 by 1 set. It’s a triangle concept. We talked about this recently on a clinic and basically what we’re going to try to do was use it off of our curl flat concept.

[00:00:17] So in the Curl-Flat we’re getting here, and the shoot. The curl is going 12 to 14 then back down towards the quarterback and the shoot is going four to eight here and just really we’re looking for with on the shoot. That’s the most important thing is getting width as fast we can.

[00:00:34] So what starts to happen on this against Cover 3 which is a great route concept against Cover 3 as long as the corner stays over top. Well now we’ll get the strong safety going out and covering the flat here and then with the corner driving down and basically coming down over underneath the curl route.

[00:00:51] There’s a couple of things here. We could wheel that and just play out of our normal two by two set. OK, we could wheel the Y and that’s effective if the strong safety is trying to jump the shoot. OK if the Strong Safety is really trying to jump the shoot route that’s great. But if the strong safety’s playing with good technique and the corners getting down then the strong safety will be able to run with the wheel and it’s not as effective.

[00:01:12] What we did was we took the receiver from the other side the H-back and we can bring him in motion or we can line up. He doesn’t have to be in the wing set. He can be widen out little bit.

[00:01:23] What he’s going to do is run a corner route. So he’s going to get to 10 and then running the corner and running it to get underneath the free safety.

[00:01:30] Now the free safety has to play a little bit inside leverage of him and that’s why playing in the wing is a good place to do it because of that free safety plays outside leverage of him, we’ve got middle of the field open unless they roll this guy back and we’ve got other answers there.

[00:01:43] OK so if we’ve got middle of the field open then we would just bend into the middle of the field and take what they’re giving us. So he is going to play over top or maybe slightly inside and if that corner drives down now we have the ability to throw that at the corner plays over top then we should be able to throw the curl unless the strong safety hangs in the window then he’ll shoot. It’s a normal curl flat read.

[00:02:02] Everything else. You’ve got an isolation on the back side of trips you can just run a hitch. Just say hey if the hitch is there throw the hitch or the slant is there at the slant if you get a press you can, you know, if you like the one on one match up throw the fade. Whatever, it’s an isolation type of deal back there. If you like the match up there you can take it.

[00:02:20] Protection wise you know whenever you’re doing. Big on big with your protection. It’s no big deal.

[00:02:29] Five Step concept. So three out of the gun.

[00:02:33] And that’s you going to take advantage. Get your curl flat concept back if they start to jump it out of cover three.
