High School Football Coaches wear a lot of hats. You might coach both sides of the ball. And run the special teams.
Then you have to work on developing character in young athletes. You also help players with academics. Fundraising. Community outreach. Plus so much more.
Then there's the weight room. Just as important to the success of your football team. If not more important.
Maybe much more important.
Massive improvement can happen in your weight room during just one good off-season. Studies have shown significant results in young athletes in just 5 weeks of proper training.
Your players can change before your eyes. But you must have the right plan.
Top football teams have top level strength programs. It is a must-have for competing with the best.
You develop your size and speed in the weight room. Great teams have it. The bad teams are getting pushed around or run by on Game Day.
This is also where you establish great team culture. Unity. Toughness. The weight room is where you build the foundation of a perennial winning football program.
You know how important the weight room is. Every football coach knows it. When you step on the field, you can quickly find out who is winning the battle of the off-seasons.
I've been running strength programs for high school football teams for nearly 20 years. For a long time, those teams were seeing good results. Just not great.
Like most coaches, I was always studying and researching to get better at every part of coaching. It is a big time investment, but I became pretty good at programming strength training.
Eventually we reached a point where pretty good was not good enough. We needed to see massive improvement in the weight room.
If you want to make that leap you cannot be scraping by and trying to figure it out. Your players do not have time to wait for you to learn from your mistakes.
Coming up with the right plan to train dozens of very different athletes and maximize their results is extremely difficult. Only an expert can do it.
There is not enough time in the day for coaches to do it all at the highest level. You need to study the game. Learn new tactics on the field. New schemes. New drills. New techniques.
Then you are supposed to become a strength training expert too?
Malcolm Gladwell popularized the 10,000 Hours Rule. That rule says it takes 10,000 hours working on a skill to become an expert.
Assuming you want to be an expert at coaching football, you are running out of hours. You need help. You need to find someone who is already an expert for your strength program.
The good news is I already found that expert both of us need. I have a legit elite level strength coach who has already put in the work for you.
Chris Lawyer is a 25 year veteran strength and conditioning coach. He's logged over 40,000 hours professionally training, coaching and consulting.
Remember that 10,000 hour rule? Chris has blown it out of the water.
Chris has certifications from multiple organizations including the International Sports Sciences Association, the American Council on Exercise and the National Strength and Conditioning Association.
Coach Lawyer began competing in strength sports in the mid-1990s. He recognized the lack of sufficient coaching and facilities for the athletes at that time.
After years of struggling to find a productive training environment for himself and his trainees, he established his own - The Weight Room Training Center (TWR) in Richmond, VA.
Since 2001, TWR athletes working with Chris have broken numerous State, American and World records. He continues to routinely produce national level athletes in powerlifting, weightlifting and strongman competition.
(Irrelevant side note, I compete in weightlifting personally and Chris is my coach. I hold several state and regional records and have qualified for National level events.)
In 2016, our football team struggled. We were very young and way behind our opponents in size and strength. There were some great athletes, but we could not compete without making a change.
That is when I went to Chris and asked for help. I needed his expertise to put together a top notch strength program for our football players.
Chris was more than ready to help us accomplish that goal.
It is a great feeling when you know you are working with the right person. Chris listened the needs of our program. To the needs to the needs of real football coaches.
He was determined to learn exactly what football coaches need in a strength program. He cares about the results. He is not caught up in his own ego.
That is where this program separates itself from any other strength training program I have ever used. It is different from any training program available today.
I made sure Chris knew about the limitations high school football coaches face. We do not have top-notch training facilities like big college programs. At the time, I was coaching at a small rural school with a very limited weight room facility.
There was no fancy equipment in our weight room. Just 3 squat racks, 3 benches, and some rusty old bars and plates. We were working on getting new bars and bumper plates at the time.
I was also coaching in a situation where a normal day might be one coach with 20 or 30 athletes. It can be hectic and you have to prioritize safety over anything else.
Like most coaches, we had kids of all ages. From 7th graders just starting out to experienced Seniors.
Many of the athletes had no real strength training experience other than messing around on a bench press.
The consistency of training for high schoolers is often a problem we need to deal with, too. This is what you can't get from an NCAA Strength Coach. Their guys have to show up every day.
Our athletes were also in basketball, wrestling, baseball, track and soccer. Playing multiple sports is just as important for development as working out in the weight room.
Then you have snow days, Spring Break, exam week, family vacations. It is never a point A to point B progression in the world of a football coach. This is different from training elite athletes.
Chris understood all of these bumps in the road.
I did not make this an easy job for Chris. Football coaches make it pretty tough on the strength guy. But he was up to the challenge.
I asked Chris to make an incredible strength program. One that would produce amazing results. And it needs to work in a less than ideal environment with completely unpredictable variables.
That is the world of coaching high school football. It is the world of off-season training for high school football.
The results we had were incredible.
During the first off-season using the new strength training program, we knew the numbers were good. On average, we saw a 73% increase in strength in the core lifts during the year.
Power Clean. Squat. Bench.
More importantly, those increases carried over to the field. Our record improved from 4-6 in 2016 to an 8-4 finish in 2017.
That team went from being pushed around by bigger and stronger teams, to pushing other teams around. It was a huge success.
The improvement continued in 2018 with a 10-2 record. Only the second 10 win season in school history.
Now it's all happening again, at a new program. A school that had won only four games in the 3 seasons prior to our arrival.
The first season was tough, with only one month in the weight room due to the global pandemic. We still managed to win four games that season alone.
But the second season? First season with a full JDFB Weight Room Off-Season program?
That team finished with the first winning record in 17 years and made it into the playoffs. A huge turnaround, and JDFB Weight Room was a big part of the process.
We're just getting started.
Since I started sharing this football strength system, 285 programs have used JDFB Weight Room to make their football team better.
The details are not fancy. You do not require special equipment. This just works.
JDFB Weight Room follows the Coach Simple, Play Fast, Win philosophy of everything we do at Joe Daniel Football.
Here is what some of our clients have to say...
"JDFB has a wide variety of information available to all coaches that is useful no matter what level you coach at or size of your school. There is something for everyone on this site."

The core of the program is the 24-Week Off-Season strength training cycle. This is a meticulously planned progression for your athletes to build strength, explosiveness and power.
This is a 3-Day per week program. Each workout takes 60 to 90 minutes to complete.
The prescribed lifts follow a 3-phase approach to developing high performance athletes. Most workouts use explosive lifts, followed by strength building lifts. They conclude with accessory work.
The explosive training uses cleans and variations like Hang Cleans and Power Cleans. The strength building phase uses squats, bench press and shoulder presses.
Your football players need power. Power is created by a combination of increased explosiveness with increased strength. Programs that focus too heavily on one or the other do not get optimal performance. Chris put together the perfect mix for football players.
The third phase is no less important. Chris as built in accessory lifts specifically to prevent injuries that football players deal with most. Since implementing the program, we have seen a significant decrease in common injuries like hamstring pulls, knee injuries and even concussions.
The importance of strength training does not stop when the season starts. With the Complete JDFB Weight Room program, you get access to the 16 Week In-Season programming.
To keep performing at a top level all season, we developed a plan using a 2-Day per week schedule. This plan uses specific percentages and lifts to maintain and even increase strength while facing the rigors of a high school football season.
This is extremely important. Players can quickly lose off-season progress without an excellent in-season approach. You do not want to put in all that work from January to July, only to have it disappear by playoff time.
Everything in the Complete JDFB Weight Room strength training system is valued at $1,395. But we know that football coaches have plenty of expenses already on the table.
You get lifetime access to the programs. Use them year in and year out. Plus get any revisions made from year to year. Not that the programming changes much, we felt like after a few tweaks we had hit a home run.
Use the On-Ramp Program to get new athletes caught up quickly. Establish baseline strength so that players roll seamlessly into the off-season plan. This is great for rising athletes coming from your feeder schools.
With the complete system, you get so much more than just the sets and reps, too. You have access to myself and Chris Lawyer on our private forum to ask questions any time.
Plus you can watch video of each lift being performed. Hear key coaching points to be sure lifts are executed safely and correctly. And you can learn how to improve the lifts or modify lifts to fit your available equipment through the forum.
